A Summer Proposal in the Vondelpark
By Aleksandria Rudenko | Published 1 November 2026

Under a chestnut tree so big that the two of them look tiny beneath it, Jonas went down on one knee. He and Lena had come over from Germany for a long weekend in August. His proposal in the Vondelpark was the one plan she didn’t know about. As far as she knew, they were on their way to lunch on a terrace in the park.
Jonas, meanwhile, had a ring in his pocket and my map with one tree marked on it. He had booked one of my couple photoshoots in Amsterdam online, and Lena knew nothing about it.
A Chestnut Tree on a Quiet Lawn
I was in position at two o’clock, at the edge of a lawn in the Vondelpark. The chestnut trees there are huge, and by mid-August their leaves were already turning brown at the edges. I stood well back, with a long view of the spot, and waited.

The Proposal in the Vondelpark
At ten past two, they walked onto the grass. Jonas glanced over at me, turned to Lena and went down on one knee. Both her hands flew to her face. I kept my distance, so the whole tree stayed in the frame and nothing gave me away. Then she pulled him up into a long hug, and afterward she just stood there, looking at her hand.

Only then did I walk over. Jonas wore a white T-shirt with a yellow sun on it, and Lena an oversized cream one. Against the dark leaves, both of them seemed to glow.

A Ring Among Summer Flowers
In August, the flower beds of the park were still full. So the ring got a few frames of its own there. First it rested on Lena’s hand above pink wildflowers, then over a hedge of tiny white blossoms. Finally, I set it down among pale pink flowers with yellow hearts.

Below the Vondel Statue
Next, they sat down on the stone ledge below the statue of Joost van den Vondel, the poet the park is named after. Yellow flowers and white shrubs grow all around his pedestal. Here I didn’t direct much. All I asked Jonas was when he had bought the ring, and Lena’s laugh did the rest.

Dancing Through the Vondelpark
After that, we walked. Beside an old dead tree trunk, they began to dance, and Jonas swept Lena up into his arms while she kicked one foot high in the air. Then they came toward me hand in hand, with the Vondelpark Pavilion and its small domed towers behind them.

By the pond, I slowed my shutter, so their steps blurred into the reeds and the water. A few minutes later, they leaned together against a big tree at the water’s edge.

On a park bench, they sat close for a while. For the last frames, Lena jumped into Jonas’s arms. Only an hour before, his proposal in the Vondelpark had still been a secret. Now the very last frame is a kiss, her long hair falling over his shoulder.
