Sally has worked as a flight attendant for more than ten years, and Amsterdam is one of her favorite cities. One autumn day, she came back as a solo traveler in Amsterdam, this time with a photowalk of her own.
She booked one of my portrait photoshoots in Amsterdam, so all she had to bring was herself.
- Where

How a Solo Traveler Found Me
It started on one of her flights out of Amsterdam. A young couple on board kept looking at the photos from their romantic session in the city. Sally asked them for their photographer’s contact details. A few months later, she booked her own walk.
We met on a quiet street of herringbone bricks and old iron lamp posts. The low sun came through the trees behind her, and she walked toward me as if the street were hers.

Autumn Light on the Canals
She wore a beige knit cardigan, flared blue jeans and white sneakers, with a navy canvas bag over her shoulder. Easy, warm colors suit autumn, and they suit the film-like warmth of my style too. I always suggest clothes that feel like you on a good day, and hers did. On a canal bridge, the trees had just started to turn yellow and orange.

Her Own Camera, Her Own Pace
Sally travels with a small camera of her own, and she kept using it. She leaned on the railing to frame the canal, then turned the camera on me and laughed. Those moments were hers, so I photographed them just as they happened.
In between, I gave her space. She leaned back on a railing beside a parked bike, or closed her eyes and pushed her hair back. Sometimes I stepped far back instead: from across the water, she became a small figure among the bikes as a boat sailed by. For a solo traveler in Amsterdam, that freedom is half the fun.

A Pocket Mirror and a Bench
Between spots, she touched up her red lipstick in a small round mirror. I came in close and let the mirror frame the details: her lips in one shot, a single eye in the next. Then she sat down on a concrete bench on a square nearby, calm and at ease.

A Solo Traveler on Two Wheels
A trip to Amsterdam needs a bike, so we ended on two wheels. Before we finished, she read a few pages of her book on a concrete block. Then she rode a black Dutch bike with a crate on the front across the wide brick square, laughing all the way.
No rush, no plan, only the city: it was the right ending for this walk.
