These photo spots in Rotterdam all come from my own sessions. They lie in three areas: the Scheepvaartkwartier, the Maas by the Willemsbrug and Trompenburg in Kralingen. Each area holds a whole session on its own.
The guide is for couples and solo clients who like to see a place before they choose it. For every spot, you see when I photographed there, what the light did and which photos it gave. Still deciding on a session? Start with how I work as a photographer in Rotterdam.

Photo Spots in the Scheepvaartkwartier
The Scheepvaartkwartier, the old shipping quarter on the Maas, holds three spots within minutes of each other. I photographed two sessions here: engagement photos on a June morning and solo portraits on an August evening.
1. The Veerhaven
June, 10:15–10:41 | August, 18:06–18:11 | Minutes from the Maas quay

The Veerhaven is a small historic harbor full of old sailing ships, with modern towers rising behind their masts. Along the quay run a railing, old lanterns and a row of trees. In June, the couple rode two city bikes here, so the masts slid past behind them.

The two sessions met the same quay in very different light. On the June morning, bright sun and big white clouds took turns over the harbor. That August evening, the sun came in low and warm along the old facades, while the trees kept part of the quay in shade.
2. The Maas Quay by the Erasmusbrug
June, 10:51–11:26 | August, 17:52–18:02 | An open quay without shade
From the Veerhaven, the river is only a few minutes away. Where the harbor meets the Maas, a white sign on a mooring post welcomes yachts, with an old lamppost right beside it. Here the view opens up to the Erasmusbrug and the towers of De Rotterdam across the water. In August, our last frames on the river were at 18:02. By 18:06, we were walking past the lanterns of the Veerhaven.

From experience
The quay has no shade at all, so the sky sets the mood. In June, big white clouds kept drifting past, and the light changed from minute to minute. In August, the sky stayed clear, and the evening sun lit the white bridge. I work with whatever the day brings, and the two days gave very different frames.
3. The Parklaan and Its Grand Houses
June, 11:41–12:00 | August, 17:37–17:44 | Grand houses, a tall door, old trees
Together with the Veerhaven, the Parklaan forms the heart of the quarter, with grand old houses along it. In June, a sea-green Land Rover stood in front of a house full of red roses. Next door, the Elevatorhuis still carries its name above the entrance.
A few minutes away, a tall wooden door with stained glass stands under a heavy stone balcony. Both sessions stopped here: in June three minutes before the Land Rover, and in August on the way to the river.

Old trees are close by, too. The August session began on a bench and in a long avenue of trees, while the low sun came through the leaves. That evening is told in summer evening portraits in Rotterdam.
In June, the morning ended on a park bench, four minutes after the last frames by a classic Jaguar. You can follow the whole route in engagement photos in the Scheepvaartkwartier.

The River by the Willemsbrug
4. Across From Het Witte Huis
Late March, a sunny day | Black-and-white film | Ended at De Hef
A second area lies on the Maas by the Willemsbrug, the bridge next to the Erasmusbrug. Across the water stands Het Witte Huis, a white Art Nouveau building and one of the first high-rises in Europe.

In late March, I photographed a surprise proposal here on black-and-white film. It was a sunny day, and the spring sun stood low, often straight into the lens. As a result, the frames turned into strong contrasts, long shadows and silhouettes against the river.

The pylon of the Willemsbrug rises right beside the quay, so it filled the background of a kiss by the railing. Afterward, the session ended under the steel frame of De Hef, the old railway lift bridge. Every frame of that day is in a surprise proposal on film in Rotterdam.
Trompenburg, a Garden in Kralingen
The third area is green and enclosed: Trompenburg Tuinen & Arboretum, a botanic garden of about eight hectares in Kralingen. Of all the photo spots in Rotterdam here, it is the only one with tickets and opening hours.
5. The Iron Bridge and the Green Arch
July, 12:06–12:29 | Gravel paths, old trees, patches of sun
In July, I photographed a surprise proposal here, and the first half hour was simply a walk. Gravel paths wind between old trees, where the midday sun fell in patches. By a huge hollow tree stands a dark iron bridge. A little farther on, the path runs under a long green arch.

6. The White Bridge
July, 12:31–12:39 on the bridge | A bench under a leaning tree at 13:04

In another corner of the garden, a small white wooden bridge has red flower spikes along its sides. That is where the question came, at 12:36, while I stayed half hidden behind the plants. Afterward, a green bench under a leaning tree gave the two of them a quiet place to sit.

The garden has its own rules for photo sessions, so they shape the plan. A session there needs a reservation with the garden and takes place within opening hours (the garden’s rules, in Dutch). Everyone stays on the paths and the grass, and dogs are not allowed.

The full hour, from the first walk to the ring, is in a surprise proposal at Trompenburg.
How a Session at These Photo Spots Works
Each of these photo spots in Rotterdam belongs to one area, and each area is one session. For a one-hour photoshoot, we stay within one area, because moving between separate areas takes time away from photographing. One area is plenty, though. In August, about an hour gave us a bench, old trees, a tall door, the river and the harbor, all on foot.

I suggest the area and map out the route, based on the light, the atmosphere and the surroundings. Before the day, I also share outfit suggestions. One or two outfits work well, and both sessions in the Scheepvaartkwartier had one change along the way. During the session, I guide you with simple direction, so you can relax and enjoy the walk.
Light rain is usually not a problem. If I confirm that the weather makes a session impractical, you can reschedule without extra cost. After the session, your digital gallery is normally ready within seven days. Film photos take up to about fifteen days, because the lab first develops and scans the film.
