Fifty years after their wedding day, this couple celebrated their golden anniversary in Rotterdam with a high tea for family and friends. I photographed the afternoon on the sunny terrace of Het Witte Paard, from the first hugs to a song, a ring and a family portrait.
Celebrations like this one show why I love working as a photographer in Rotterdam: real people, real emotion and a day that unfolds on its own.

A Golden Anniversary Under a Thatched Roof
Het Witte Paard is a brick restaurant with a thatched roof, a white picket fence and a terrace full of parasols. A flag by the door listed what happens there, from lunch and dinner to parties and high tea. That afternoon, a long table waited in the sun for the guests.

The couple welcomed everyone at the gate. He wore a navy suit and a spotted tie; she wore a color-block dress in coral, white and gray, with a string of pearls. For a golden anniversary in Rotterdam, the weather could not have been kinder.
Cards, Gifts and a Straw Hat
Gold is the traditional symbol of the fiftieth wedding anniversary, and the guests came with cards and presents. One card made her laugh out loud while two guests looked on. Another gift came in a wicker basket, with a straw hat on top.

Meanwhile, I moved between the groups, close enough for the expressions and far enough to stay out of the way. Nobody had to pose or stop talking, so the laughter stayed real.

A Song After Fifty Years Together
Then their children took over. Their daughter, in a red dress, sang with her arms wide open, while their son played the ukulele beside her. At the tables, the guests listened, and then they clapped.

After the song, the couple exchanged rings, a promise for the next chapter. I came in close for this one, because hands tell as much as faces: her fingers around his, and a sparkle of stones between them.

Fifty Years in a Photo Album
High tea came on tiered stands: sandwiches, scones, puff pastries and small glasses of dessert. Between the plates, guests leafed through an album with the couple’s wedding photos from fifty years ago.

On one page lay two brooches, an owl with red eyes and a round one full of rhinestones. Details like that hold fifty years in a single frame.

Later, the whole long table raised their glasses to the couple, under the parasols and in full sun.

Finally, the family gathered for one portrait: the couple, their daughter and son, and a little grandson in a bow tie who had plenty to say. The sun even sent a small rainbow across the frame, a fitting end to a golden anniversary in Rotterdam.
