A Surprise Proposal at the Hortus Botanicus

Maya keeps a whole windowsill of cacti at home. So Ravi planned the big question for the end of February, in the glass houses of Amsterdam’s old botanical garden. His proposal at the Hortus Botanicus took place in the Desert Greenhouse, among cacti even taller than he is.

A surprise like his is one of the ways my couple photoshoots in Amsterdam can begin. Ravi booked online, and Maya had no idea.

Ten Quiet Minutes in the Desert Greenhouse

At ten to one, the Desert Greenhouse of the Hortus Botanicus was still quiet. A rust-red wall rose behind tall columns of cacti, and a path of pale sand curved toward it. For his proposal at the Hortus Botanicus, Ravi had my map with this exact spot marked on it. Meanwhile, I took my own place behind a big cactus, where I looked like any other visitor.

Through the glass behind the prickly pears, I could see canal houses under a white sky. Inside, though, it felt like another continent.

One Knee Among the Cacti

At one o’clock, they walked in, and Ravi caught my eye. In front of the red wall, he went down on one knee. Before the ring was on her finger, Maya bent down and threw her arms around him. So he stood up, they both laughed, and then he knelt a second time to slide the ring on.

All that time, I stayed back, with the cacti between us like a curtain. Only when Maya turned to me, one hand over her mouth, did I step out.

A Ring on a Succulent

While they caught their breath, I borrowed the ring for a few minutes. A pale green succulent grew by the path, and its rosette held the gold band like a small cup. Around it, the room offered more details: an agave with sharp tips and a cluster of round barrel cacti.

Then we went back to the red wall for closer portraits. Maya held Ravi’s face in both hands and kissed his cheek, and the new ring showed in every frame. For one last picture in the room, he sat on the curved ledge while she stood beside him.

Bare Trees in the Hortus Botanicus

On our way out of the glass houses, I slowed my shutter while they walked past, so the plants turned into green streaks around them. Outside, the garden trees were still bare at the end of February. Their twisted branches hung over the paths, and the two of them simply walked and held each other.

A little farther on, an old iron footbridge crosses the garden’s pond. They stopped in the middle for a kiss. I stayed on the bank, so the bridge and the bare trees fill the frame.

To warm up, we went into the Palm House. The jackets came off, and under the glass dome, Ravi lifted Maya off her feet. Among the palms, I then came in close. Maya rested her hand on his shoulder, so the ring lay on his cream sweater.

The Hortus Botanicus in Black and White

For the last ten minutes, we walked along a brick greenhouse with tall windows. The gray sky and the bare garden asked for black and white, so I switched my camera over. Next, I asked them to stop by the windows, close together.

In the last frame, they lean their heads together and smile straight at me. Just over an hour earlier, Maya had walked into the garden without knowing about the ring.
