A Keukenhof Couple Photographer’s Spring Story
John and Margaret arrived from London on a soft April afternoon, five years after leaving Manchester together. For seasons, they had dreamed of Keukenhof, tending their small city garden and imagining those colours. When they finally booked their tulip fields loveshoot, their wish was simple. They wanted partner portraits that felt like them — unhurried, playful, warm at the edges. Therefore, I began shaping the day around that exact feeling. Planning a Loveshoot in the Netherlands
Before the couple photography session, I sent them a few notes on what to wear and when to arrive. I suggested soft neutrals so the tulips could breathe around them. Margaret chose a cream ribbed knit dress, while John arrived in a deep royal blue jumper and off-white trousers. Together we mapped a gentle loop through Keukenhof’s quieter paths, avoiding the busiest beds during peak hours. This route came from years of experience as a Keukenhof couple photographer. The look of this tulip fields loveshoot comes entirely from my in-camera process on the Fujifilm GFX. I shape every frame through intentional choices in lens, aperture, and light, never afterwards on a screen. For instance, at the rhododendron bush, I opened the aperture wide. The red blossoms fell into a soft blur behind them. Later, in a bed of yellow tulips, I knelt and let the nearest blooms go out of focus. Consequently, a wash of gold framed the bottom of the portrait. Throughout the afternoon, I watched for the quiet beats between poses, because those carry a couple’s story best. The film-like warmth is simply what April gave us, held in the moment itself.
