Man on one knee on a white wooden bridge while she covers her face with both hands, a surprise proposal in the Trompenburg gardens

A surprise proposal shoot works in a few clear steps. You book the Proposal Photoshoot online, and I send you a map to the proposal spot with a few simple preparations. On the day, I am already in position when you arrive. You propose at your own pace while I photograph the reactions, and afterward we continue with a relaxed couple photoshoot nearby.

This guide is for anyone planning a proposal in the Netherlands who wants the moment in photos. Each step follows how my proposal photoshoots work, shown with real proposals in Rotterdam and The Hague and at Keukenhof.

How Do I Book a Surprise Proposal Shoot?

You book a surprise proposal shoot online in three steps: pick a time slot and location, share your story and ideas, then complete the checkout. There you pay a €50 deposit or the full amount. The Proposal Photoshoot is a one-hour session with 20 photo downloads.

One hour keeps us in one picturesque area. With two or three hours, we can move between different surroundings, and every extra hour adds 15 more downloads.

Besides Amsterdam, the list of locations includes Haarlem, Utrecht, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, the Zaanse Schans and Keukenhof, which opens only in spring. Any travel costs or location surcharges appear in the checkout total before you pay.

To keep the secret, book from an inbox your partner does not share. Keep the confirmation out of any shared calendar, too. I only contact the person who booked, never the partner you plan to surprise.

What Happens Before the Day?

After your booking, I send you a map with clear instructions to the proposal spot, along with a few simple preparations. I also share outfit suggestions before the photoshoot. Because I suggest the area and the route, there is nothing for you to scout.

Your partner needs only a natural reason to be dressed up and walking in the right direction. A dinner reservation nearby does the job. By the Maas in Rotterdam, for example, the two of them came dressed for a premiere. He wore a tuxedo and a bow tie, and she chose a long black dress with a pale fur coat.

And if the weather turns? When I confirm that it makes the photoshoot impractical, you can reschedule without extra cost. Light rain is usually not a problem.

Where Will You Be During the Surprise Proposal?

I am already in position when you arrive. Until after the proposal, I keep my distance and stay discreet, so nothing gives the surprise away. Where exactly I stand depends on the spot.

At Keukenhof, I stood across a bed of white tulips, far enough away to look like any other visitor. A phone on a tripod filmed the moment. You can see the whole evening in an evening proposal on film at Keukenhof.

By the Maas in Rotterdam, I stayed back on the cobbles while he knelt, with Het Witte Huis across the water. In the Trompenburg gardens, meanwhile, I waited at the end of a small white bridge, half behind the plants.

How Does the Proposal Moment Go?

When you arrive, make eye contact with me and wait for my signal. That way, we both know the moment can begin. Keep the ring with you and take it out yourself when the time comes. Then take a little longer than usual, so I have time for several photos rather than one.

As you place the ring, keep your hands below your partner’s, so the gesture stays visible to the camera. That is all you need to remember. The rest is yours.

Those extra seconds matter. On the white bridge at Trompenburg, the knee, the ring and the first hug took about three minutes, from 12:36 to 12:39. Meanwhile, I photographed from the end of the bridge and from farther back among the trees.

From experience

In both of these proposals, a hand went to the face before a single word came out. On the beach, she even bent down to kiss him before the ring was on her finger. So a few extra seconds on one knee make a real difference.

What Happens After the Yes?

Afterward, we continue with a relaxed couple photoshoot nearby, so your first moments as an engaged couple become part of the same story. On the beach, there were happy tears and a lot of laughter, and I gave them that moment before I came closer. Then I guide you with simple direction, as in any couple session.

She looks down at the new ring on her hand while he smiles at the lens, the white railing behind them just after the surprise proposal

The ring gets a few frames of its own as well. On Scheveningen beach, it rested among pink peonies and then on the sand beside a white shell. You can follow that morning in a surprise proposal on Scheveningen beach.

Her hand with the new blue ring resting on his cheek as they lean in close on the beach, both in sunglasses, the sea soft behind them

Then we walk. On Scheveningen beach, the two of them headed along the water toward the Pier, hand in hand.

Film is an option too. The Analog Photofilm add-on combines digital photos with a roll of film, and you can also book a film photoshoot on its own. By the Maas, I photographed the proposal on black-and-white film, as you can see in a surprise proposal on film in Rotterdam.

Can the Couple Photos Come First?

The steps above are how I set up a surprise. Two of the sessions in this guide went another way, though: they began as a couple photoshoot, and the knee came partway through. On Scheveningen beach, we spent ten minutes on couple photos by the water before he knelt at 11:25.

In the Trompenburg gardens, it was half an hour of walking and couple photos first. At 12:36, on a small white bridge, he stopped and went down on one knee. The full story is in a surprise proposal in the Trompenburg gardens.

This way, your partner knows about a photoshoot, just not about the ring. It is one way it can go, not a rule, and the moment itself stays yours either way.

When Do We Get the Proposal Shoot Photos?

Your digital gallery is normally ready within 7 days, once you have paid any outstanding balance. With Priority Delivery, it arrives within 1 day. Film photos normally follow within 15 days, because the lab first develops and scans the film.

I upload every photo from your surprise proposal shoot to your gallery, so nothing stays hidden. The one-hour package includes 20 downloads, and each extra favorite costs €7. Your gallery stays online for one month, or a full year with the Extended Gallery add-on. Every session also includes a €25 print credit.

There is no rush to announce anything, either. I will not share anything from your session until you have told the people you want to tell. Delivery, changes and rescheduling are all in the FAQ.
