This surprise proposal at Trompenburg began as a simple couple shoot, at least for Sofia. Lukas had planned a weekend in Rotterdam, and the gardens were his idea.
Sofia loves plants, so a green garden in Kralingen suited them both. As a photographer in Rotterdam, I planned our route so a small white bridge came last.

A Garden Walk Before the Question
Trompenburg is an arboretum of about eight hectares, first laid out some two hundred years ago. We started on its gravel paths, where the sun fell through the leaves in patches. Lukas wore a brown polo and cream trousers, and Sofia a long brown strapless dress.

By an old hollow tree, they leaned on the railing of a dark iron bridge. Later, between tall grasses and purple flowers, Sofia closed her eyes against his cheek. For half an hour it looked like any couple shoot, and that was exactly the plan.

Under a long arch of green, they walked hand in hand while her dress swung with every step.

The Surprise Proposal on the White Bridge
Just after half past twelve, we reached a small white wooden bridge with red flowers along its sides. Halfway across, Lukas stopped, turned around and went down on one knee. Sofia pressed both hands to her face. Meanwhile, I stayed at the end of the bridge, half behind the plants, and kept shooting.

When he slid the ring onto her finger, she laughed and cried at the same time. A minute later she was wiping away tears, while Lukas could not stop grinning.

Then came the hug, long and tight, right there on the bridge.

From farther back, the old trees made the two of them look very small. Of course, Sofia also held up her hand to show the ring.

The Ring Among Pink Flowers
Afterward, we took our time with the details of this surprise proposal at Trompenburg. Her hand rested in his next to a feathery pink flower, a thin gold bracelet at her wrist. Then I set the ring itself on one of those flowers and let the garden blur around it.

In the shade, he turned the ring on her finger once more. Later, on a bench, she held his face while they kissed, the ring right in the frame.

After the Proposal at Trompenburg
We ended on a green bench under a leaning tree, where they sat close and talked quietly. For the last frame, I stepped back and kept the whole garden around them. That is how this surprise proposal at Trompenburg ended: on a bench, with nowhere else to be.

They arrived as a couple on a weekend away, and they walked out through the gate engaged. Curious how the secret part works? Read how a surprise proposal shoot works.
