Three Generations in White at Keukenhof
By Aleksandria Rudenko | Updated 28 October 2026

This family brought three generations to Keukenhof, eight people in all, and every one of them wore white. I photographed them on a spring afternoon in the garden. We went from a grandmother’s portrait to a dance on the path, and ended with a last walk under the trees.
A family day like this is what my tulip photoshoots at Keukenhof are made for: room to play, color everywhere and time for everyone.
Pearls and Pink Rhododendrons
We began with the grandmother. She wore a white blouse and a string of pearls. Calm and smiling, she sat on a white stool in front of a wall of pink rhododendrons. Portraits of the eldest are often the ones a family treasures most, so I gave her all the time she needed.

Then she stood hand in hand with another lady of the family, both in white, between beds of soft yellow tulips. Standing side by side was all the direction they needed.

Three Generations at Keukenhof
Keukenhof opens for only about eight weeks each spring, and that afternoon the tulip beds were at their brightest. With three generations at Keukenhof, I kept the groups changing, so nobody had to stand still for long. On a wide path between pink and red tulips, the parents danced while the children twirled beside them.

The boy in his yellow sneakers spun his sister around. Later, he carried her on his back past the rhododendrons, and she grinned over his shoulder. After that, the four of them squeezed together in front of tulips in every color.

Their father could hardly stand up straight for laughing when both children hugged him at once. Later, in a blue blazer, he pulled their mother close between rows of yellow tulips.

Yellow Sneakers and Giant Clogs
Small things made these photos their own: the boy’s yellow sneakers and the girl’s polka-dot tights. Among soft pink tulips, she leaned in close to the flowers and grinned straight at me.
Nearby, a woman of the family in sunglasses found a pair of giant green clogs. She posed in front of them with her arms wide, as if she had just stepped out. Moments like that keep the afternoon light, and they often become the photos everyone shares first.

The Whole Family at Keukenhof
Toward the end, a couple in sunglasses walked down a path lined with red and white tulips. Tall trees threw long shadows across it. He kissed her cheek without slowing down.

Finally, the adults gathered for one more frame, with the grandmother in the middle. I stepped back for a wider view, so the tulips could frame all five. It was a fitting last frame for three generations at Keukenhof: everyone close, and everyone in white.
